About UCLA Legal Affairs
The Office of the Campus Counsel (OCC) serves as the in-house legal office for UCLA, including its professional schools. OCC attorneys provide counsel and legal advice to university leaders while also serving as a liaison between UCLA, the Office of the General Counsel for the University of California in Oakland, and outside counsel engaged on behalf of the University.
Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Vice Chancellor, Legal Affairs, and in coordination with the Office of General Counsel for the University of California, the Principal Campus Counsel provides legal advice on a wide range of issues associated with UCLA's administration, management, and operations. Areas of specialization for each role may include:
- Litigation: Address litigation matters, government and internal investigations, public records and other information requests, privacy, and immigration, as well as advising on other legal issues throughout the University.
- Research: Support UCLA's research enterprise, including government grants and contracting, research administration and compliance, managing conflicts of interest, export controls, research misconduct, foreign research, campus safety initiatives, and other related legal issues across the campus.
- Transactions & Contracts: Provide guidance on business transactions, contracts, intellectual property, research agreements, and international activities. Additionally, advising the campus on patent, copyright, trademark, and a broad range of intellectual property-related matters, including but not limited to commercialization, consultations, and transactions.

Required Education, Licenses, and Certifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) Degree from an ABA accredited institution and active membership in good standing of the State Bar of California (or eligible for immediate membership).
- Must be a member in good standing of the California Bar (or eligible for immediate membership).
Salary and Benefits

- Anticipated Hiring Range: $245,000 - $265,000 annually
- Full Salary Range: $171,000 - $345,000 annually
UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common.
