    Housing and Economic Rights Advocates Is Hiring a Wills and Estates Attorney

    An opportunity for an attorney to lead a wills and estates practice operating within a nonprofit law office, providing direct services to the public, with modest supervision of law students or paralegals, working collaboratively with other staff. The right candidate is someone who has at least 5 years of experience working in the estate planning, trust administration, and probate environment. Candidates must be prepared to assume significant responsibility. The position is full-time with a possibility for a 4 day a week or other alternative work schedule.

    Responsibilities will include:
    • Drafting wills and trust-related documents and petitions
    • Assessing cases and strategizing for optimal efficiency and client satisfaction • Supervision of a paralegal (and possibly legal interns) to assist with legal matters
    • Client interaction to answer questions, explain procedures, plan and strategize and solve problems to determine clients' needs
    • Court appearances
    • Workshops/seminars for consumers
    • Collaborative work with other office members

    Qualifications include:
    • At least 5 years of estate planning and estate administration experience
    • Estate planning experience should include drafting revocable and irrevocable trusts, wills, advance health care directives, and powers of attorney.
    • Applicants must also have experience performing legal research, and preparing memoranda or other documentation to communicate their findings.
    • Strong organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, detail oriented, timeliness and good follow-through of cases are required.
    • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
    • Strong work ethic and high level of integrity
    • Knowledge of relevant software including MS Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.)
    • Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures and ability to understand and work in a non-profit, law office environment
    • Active membership in good standing -- State Bar of California

    Salary will be dependent upon qualifications.

    Education and/or Experience:

    Requires a Juris Doctorate and license to practice law, in good standing, in California. At least 5 years of experience as a practicing attorney. Experience with diverse people and cultures important. Foreign language expertise desirable.
